Northwest Division patrol officers responded to a call for assistance near 97 Street and 119 Avenue on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016, where upon arrival they found a male lying unconscious on the sidewalk.

It was reported to police that two males were walking down 97 Street at approximately 3:20 a.m., Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016, when they were approached by four male and two female suspects. It is alleged that the suspects - not known to the complainants - attempted to start a fight with the two men, who ignored the suspects and continued to walk away.

The suspects reportedly assaulted the men, repeatedly punching one of the men in the face, while pushing the other to the ground, before repeatedly kicking Leonard in the head.

The suspects are believed to have fled the scene on foot, leaving Leonard in an unconscious state on the ground and the second male complainant with minor injuries.

Paramedics arrived on scene and were able to revive Leonard, before transporting him to hospital, where he would later succumb to his injuries.

The Medical Examiner confirmed that Leonard died as a result of injuries consistent with severe head trauma.
