On Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024, at 8:15 p.m. police were conducting proactive enforcement at the Coliseum LRT station when a male suspect was observed breaking multiple bike equipment bylaws. After several demands for his ID, police advised the male that he was under arrest. The suspect resisted before he was successfully apprehended. No members were injured and the suspect refused EMS treatment. Police located a loaded rifle with a sawed-off barrel, multiple rounds of ammunition and over $1,000 of fentanyl and methamphetamine in the suspect’s bag. Rustin Lyle Benwell, 31, was charged with eight weapons and drug-related offences, including possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, obstructing a peace officer and possession of a controlled substance (x2).
