Charges laid in Edmonton Remand Centre homicide

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) Homicide Section has charged a 32-year-old Edmonton man in relation to the death of a man found deceased at the Edmonton Remand Centre (ERC) in December 2024.

On Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2024, at approximately 3:05 p.m. police were called by ERC staff about an assault between two inmates. It was reported that a 26-year-old male sustained injuries during an altercation in ERC. He was transported to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

An autopsy was completed on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024, and the Edmonton Medical Examiner determined that Nathaniel Burchat, 26, died as a result of a blunt head injury, and the manner of death is homicide.

After police completed an investigation, Kai Keller, 32, was charged with second degree murder. His next court appearance is today, Friday, Jan. 17, 2025. Keller remains in custody.
