Last month’s shooting totals are lower than 2023’s numbers and mark an annual decrease in shooting reports this year, compared to last year.

Police have recorded seven shootings in December 2024, compared to the 17 shootings Edmonton saw during the same month in 2023. As of Dec. 31, 2024, shootings are down 47% year to date compared to 2023.

Shootings by month in 2024 and 2023

Of the seven reported shootings in December 2024, six are believed to be targeted and six resulted in reported injuries. There were three deaths as a result of shooting occurrences last month. In three of the seven shootings, there was potential for innocent bystanders to be harmed.

“It’s excellent that we saw an annual decrease in shootings in 2024 as compared to 2023,” says Staff Sergeant Eric Stewart, with the EPS Guns and Gangs Section. “As we look toward the new year, we remain committed to tackling gun crime, serious crimes and keeping firearms off of our streets.”

Police seized 49 firearms in December, and 804 overall in 2024. That’s compared to 892 firearms were seized in 2023.
