February homicide investigation concluded

For Immediate Release: 04-Mar-2025 @ 10:00 AM
MRU #: H25R001-2

Homicide charges are not being laid in relation to a death that took place in central Edmonton in February.

On Feb. 5, 2025, at approximately 11:41 p.m., police responded to reports of an assault involving multiple people fighting at the MacEwan LRT station. When police arrived, they located a 13-year-old male, who was declared deceased on scene by EMS.

On Feb. 7, 2025, an autopsy conducted by the Edmonton Medical Examiner determined the cause of death was a stab wound, and the manner of death was confirmed to be homicide.

The deceased was part of a group of four youths and one 18-year-old male who assaulted two members of the vulnerable inner-city community, a 34-year-old male and a 32-year-old female, who were sheltering at the LRT station. The 13-year-old youth was stabbed in the ensuing altercation.

Homicide investigators consulted with the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service regarding the possibility of laying charges in the Feb. 5, 2025 death of the 13-year-old male, and have determined that there is no likelihood of conviction due to evidence that the murder was committed in self-defense. As such, no charges will be laid in relation to the youth’s death.

The other three youths, a 15-year-old female, a 14-year-old female, and a 14-year-old male, and the 18-year-old male, Destynd Jackson, were charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and possess offensive weapon dangerous to the public in relation to the assault of the 34-year-old male and the 32-year-old female.
