For Immediate Release: 14-Apr-2025 @ 11:45 AM
MRU #: F25R006

March shooting totals more than double since February, show 54% increase from March 2024.

Police recorded 20 shootings in March 2025, an increase from the 8 shootings recorded in February and the 13 shootings recorded in the same month in 2024.

Shootings by month in 2024 and 2025

Of the 20 reported shootings in March 2025, 17 were believed to be targeted and eight resulted in reported injuries. There were no deaths as a result of shooting occurrences last month.  In 17 of the 20 shootings, there was potential for innocent bystanders, including children, to be harmed.

“While we saw a sharp uptick in shootings last month, it’s important to note that the overall trend year over year remains stable and continues to be a marked decrease from years prior,” says Staff Sergeant Eric Stewart of the EPS Guns and Gangs Section. "Gun crime is often unpredictable, particularly in large urban centres, but our Guns and Gangs Strategy has proven effective in tackling this violence and our teams will continue to diligently purse this strategy to keep Edmontonians safe.”

Police seized 71 firearms in February and 198 in 2025 so far, as compared to 181 at this time last year.
