Of the total 902 traffic violations, a combined (automated and manned enforcement) 733 were solely related to speed. There were also 169 other violations, which included 57 red light violation infractions, 56 non-hazardous TSA infractions (equipment, documents etc.), 37 hazardous infractions (moving violations), 9 distracting driving violations, 7 criminal code driving offences, and 3 other criminal code charges related to vehicle stops.
That afternoon, at approximately 3:20 p.m., Major Collision Investigation Section (MCIS) investigated a serious collision that an adult male operating a power assisted bicycle was westbound on Princess Elizabeth Avenue when he attempted to turn left to proceed southbound on 109 Street. At the same time, a SUV travelling eastbound on Princess Elizabeth Avenue at the intersection of 109 Street struck the cyclist. The 26-year-old cyclist was transported to hospital with serious life-threatening injuries.
The Edmonton Police Service and the City of Edmonton coordinate regular enforcement campaigns throughout the year (such as Operation 24 Hours) to improve traffic safety on Edmonton’s roadways.
