For Immediate Release: 24-Dec-2024 @ 11:15 AM
MRU #: 24R102

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has charged a 31-year-old local man following the theft of an Edmonton Food Bank van yesterday morning.

On Monday, Dec. 23, 2024, it was reported to police that a suspect stole a large GMC cutaway van from the Edmonton Food Bank loading dock (115 Avenue and 120 Street) while it was being prepared to pick up donations for the day. The vehicle’s GPS tracking device was initiated and members of the EPS Targeted Response to Auto Theft Prevention (TRAP) Team responded, locating the van in an alleyway in the area of 104 Street and 119 Avenue.TRAP

Upon arrival, officers observed the male suspect painting over the Edmonton Food Bank decals. The suspect attempted to drive away after observing police, but the van got stuck in the snow and he was subsequently arrested. Officers determined that the acrylic paint had also been stolen from a nearby store.

Jacob Doucette, 31, has since been charged with theft of motor vehicle, theft under $5,000, mischief under $5,000 and uttering threats.

“Non-profits such as our local Edmonton Food Bank rely heavily on their vehicles to help the communities they serve,” says Sgt. Brian Carfantan with the EPS TRAP Team. “We’re pleased we were able to locate the van quickly and make an arrest so that their important work can continue without delay.”
