The Polar Plunge is a unique fundraiser for Special Olympics Alberta that helps athletes with intellectual disabilities overcome challenges and compete in the sports they love.
“The Polar Plunge isn’t just about the cold, it’s about changing lives,” says Celina Foster, Vice President of Operations with Special Olympics Alberta.
“The support from the Edmonton Police Service means everything to Special Olympics athletes, proving that a little freezing water is nothing compared to the power of community.”
Police agencies and first responders across the province have been champions in raising funds and awareness for Special Olympics Alberta and are encouraging the community to donate even if they do not take the plunge themselves.
Among the polar plungers this year are MP Mike Lake, MLA Janice Irwin, EPS Deputy Chief Darren Derko, Fire Chief David Lazenby, Jeff Holland with KISS 91.7, several Edmonton Elks players, and numerous first responders from agencies across the region. Many wear their uniforms or costumes for their big splash.
Even though temperatures are plunging this weekend, longtime polar plunger Const. Amanda Trenchard reassures us, “Our coldest Polar Plunge was minus 40 back in 2015, and even though the air is colder, the water remains relatively the same temperature all the time.”
“After polar plungers take to the icy waters, they can warm up in a hot sauna, enjoy hots drinks, and win some cool prizes. Just remember to bring a towel and change of clothes.”
Anyone interested in participating in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity can register at the event or online at 2025 Edmonton Polar Plunge, and donations can be made at either location well.
Please join us for the thrills and chills of the Polar Plunge at Lake Summerside (1720 – 88 Street SW) on Sunday, February 2, 2025. Registration begins at 12 p.m., and the plunge starts at 1 p.m.
