Major Collision investigators seek Good Samaritan, witnesses in fatal collision

For Immediate Release: 07-Oct-2024 @ 4:30 PM
MRU #: TR24044

Edmonton Police Service Major Collision Investigations Section (MCIS) officers are looking for a Good Samaritan and other witnesses to a fatal collision.

At approximately 1:40 a.m. on Oct. 3, 2024, a white 1997 Dodge Dakota was traveling northbound on 149 Street approaching Yellowhead Trail. While attempting an eastbound turn, the operator crossed the grassy median and struck a cement barricade, resulting in the vehicle catching fire. An unknown person assisted the driver out of the vehicle before it was completely engulfed in flames.

When police arrived on the scene, Edmonton Fire Rescue was tending to the burning vehicle, and EMS was treating the driver, a 19-year-old male, who was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Through the course of the investigation, police obtained further information to suggest there may have been a second person in the vehicle at the time of the collision, and they began a search for the missing 19-year-old male occupant. On Oct. 4, 2024, police identified his remains in the severely burned vehicle.

MCIS is investigating the collision. Speed and impairment are believed to be factors.

Police are looking to identify the Good Samaritan who assisted the driver out of the vehicle, as well as any other witnesses. Anyone with dash camera footage is also requested to contact police at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com/250.
