We are aware that the conflict in the Middle East is generating concern and fear in Edmonton communities. We are connecting with affected communities and our partners to monitor the situation locally, nationally and internationally, and continue to work with all Edmontonians to ensure everyone feels safe.
At this time, there are no direct threats to the public in Edmonton. We continue to proactively patrol some places of worship, schools, community centres and other areas of significance.
We are aware that there may continue to be demonstrations planned locally, and as always, EPS will monitor these events, ensure public safety and order, and respond to calls for service accordingly. It is our role to police behaviour, not beliefs. More information about policing during a public demonstration is available on our website.
Everyone has a right to feel safe in our community. Hate is not acceptable, and criminal behaviour will not be tolerated. The EPS also tracks non-criminal hate incidents, such as the use of offensive comments or symbols. With the violence escalating in the Middle East, the EPS will be vigilant regarding hate-related events, and will work closely with impacted communities to address safety and security.
Citizens are reminded that hate incidents can now be reported online. Hate crime should be reported to police at 911 if it’s an emergency, or 780-423-4567 if it is not an emergency.
