EPS members saddle up for First Responders Rodeo

15-Jul-2024

“Every year it keeps getting bigger and bigger”

Dozens of frontline workers traded their uniforms and badges for cowboy hats and boots as they hit the dirt for the annual First Responders Rodeo.

“It’s definitely scary. I’ve been thinking about this moment since last year,” said EPS constable Michelle Pochasky.

The first responders try to tame wild beasts as they rope, ride, race and wrestle in a series of rodeo events.

It’s become a family tradition for Constable Vera Robertson who works as a photographer at the rodeo while watching her children compete. “It's the pride that comes from it, but at the same time, you're a nervous wreck,” said Robertson.

“I HAVE NOT DONE ANY RODEO SPORT BEFORE”

Constable Jeff Salmon borrowed some cowboy boots from a friend so he could make his rodeo debut. He joined two officers to compete in Wild Cow Milking. The trio managed to subdue their bucking cow but ultimately came up empty.

“I think she was already milked early this morning. She was dry. I don't know what was going on. We could get no milk out of udders,” said Salmon.

Over 45 different responder agencies were represented in the event which raises awareness and funds for the Legacy Place Society and the Zebra Child & Youth Advocacy Centre.
