Dealing with the Loss of a Loved One

The Edmonton Police Service understands how difficult it is when a loved one passes away.

What to Do

If your family member has unexpectedly passed away in your home, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Ask for an ambulance and let the operator know that you don't think your loved one is breathing. An ambulance and police officer will attend your home.

Please wait for police and EMS to arrive before you make arrangements to bring your loved one to the funeral home of your choice.

When the police officer arrives, you can request support or resources from CTSS to help guide you through the process and prepare you for what’s to come.

For coping mechanisms to help manage the loss of a loved one, see Dealing with Stress and Trauma.

If you have experienced a crime or traumatic event and require support, contact CTSS at 780-421-2217 or ctss@edmontonpolice.ca.
