In October of 2019, EPS recognized the need for more expertise and subject matter experts when dealing with firearm investigations. After further conversation, the Firearms Investigation unit (FIU) was formed. FIU is sanctioned to reduce gun crime and harm in our community by investigating, monitoring and coordinating investigations of criminal organizations, street gangs and individuals involved in gun crime. These investigations include, but are not limited to, the illegal possession, use, altering, importation, trafficking and manufacturing of firearms, weapons and prohibited devices, as well as shooting events in Edmonton.
FIU coordinates directly on files with RCMP National Weapons Enforcement Support Team (NWEST), RCMP Chief Firearms Officer (CFO), the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and other law enforcement agencies as required.
