According to the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, owners and managers have a responsibility to do everything reasonable to protect the health and safety of employees. This responsibility includes ensuring that employees are properly trained in procedures to be followed during and after a robbery.

This type of training can result in reduced losses and will certainly increase employee safety and improve the success rate of subsequent police investigations of these crimes. The STOREWATCH Training Guide is designed to help owners, managers and employees cope with this serious threat by providing information on:

• What you can do to help prevent a robbery before you are victimized.
• How the safety of customers and employees can be maintained during a robbery.
• The steps you can take after a robbery, to assist in the arrest of the suspect(s).

By adopting common sense security measures and by training your employees, you can reduce the chance that you will be robbed and you'll increase employee safety in the event you are. You will also assist in the early detection and apprehension of those responsible, thereby preventing additional armed robberies.

Robbery Section is responsible for investigating all robberies or attempted robberies of financial institutions and commercial businesses. We are also responsible for investigating robberies of armoured cars and money carriers. They coordinate the Storewatch Robbery Prevention Program which is a pro-active program that aims to prevent robberies and minimize victimization by promoting robbery prevention standards to any commercial business in the City Of Edmonton.
