Sexual Assault Section (SAS) investigates the following sexual assault offences as long as the complainants are 16 years of age or older at the time of reporting
- Aggravated Sexual Assaults
- Sexual Assaults under section 272 CCC, which include
- With a weapon;
- Causing bodily harm;
- Involving threats to a third party; and/or
- The person is party to the offense with any other person.

Serial Sex Offenses

Involving a suspect who is a stranger to the complainant and the sex act involves digital, oral, and/or penile penetration, or those acts were attempted,

SAS may take responsibility for groping type sex offenses, if it involves a stranger attack, and the offense is more violent in nature. However, these files will be taken by SAS only at the discretion of the SAS S/SGT.

Sexually motivated Break and Enters, where there is a sexual offense has been committed. If a sex offense does not occur, but the motive is believed to be sexual, the SAS S/Sgt will assess and may take responsibility of the file..

Occurred in Edmonton, but the offense is reported to an outside police agency, and

Multijurisdictional investigations that require the use of MCM. A multiagency approach to the investigation will be the responsibility of SAS at the discretion of the SAS Staff Sergeant.

Assist another agency files where the file is being investigated by SAS in that jurisdiction or a CID equivalent, such as GIS within the RCMP

Sexual Exploitation investigations (the complainant was 16 or 17 years old at the time of the occurrence and the offender was in a position of trust or authority).

At the discretion of the SAS Staff Sergeant

Historical Sexual Assaults, involving digital, oral sex, or penile penetration offenses;

That occurred more than one year prior to the reporting date;

The complainant is 16 years of age or older at the time of reporting.

Where a member of SAS has approved the use of a sexual assault kit and it falls within the mandate.
Each investigation is conducted with professionalism, thoroughness, and sensitivity.
Sexual Assault Section investigators are also available to consult on all other sexual assault files, which are investigated by other areas of the Edmonton Police Service.
